Sumba Island

Distance has preserved much of Sumba’s character, but not its immunity to change. Across the island, traditions endure alongside a growing awareness of the outside world. Along the coast, a small stand of mangroves remains where a larger grove once stood, continuing the work of protecting the shoreline. Together, these photographs consider endurance. Not as permanence, but as the act of remaining.
