Hanoi

For centuries, Hanoi’s Old Quarter was organized by trade. Streets became known for the goods made, sold and repaired there, creating a city shaped as much by work as by architecture. While modern Hanoi continues to change, many of the rhythms remain. Vendors move through the streets before dawn. Meals are prepared in open kitchens. Workshops spill into alleyways. Daily life unfolds in public view.

These photographs are of the people who keep the city moving. Some of the places shown here have already changed or disappeared. What remains is a record of a city carried forward through the work of ordinary lives.
