David’s Insight on “Pure Absence"

Bowman Lake Campground is in the Flathead National Forrest of Montana, very close to the Canadian border. It is a 6 mile drive in on unpaved roads to a small campground parking lot. Our off-road rental vehicle came with complementary bear spray. Setting up on a boat landing with the rain blocked by our hatch, the morning light slowly revealed this gorgeous scene. I was struck by the beauty of silence. The absence of other humans revealed the flutter of wings and the quiet song of the birds singing to welcome in the day. It was the kind of morning that you wished would last until the afternoon. A treat on the way back out was a stop at Polebridge's Merchantile, the oldest in Montana and a hot pocket breakfast sandwich.
