David's Insight on "Shadow Box"

Often called the "Blue City", the palette of Jodhpur is mainly seen in the old section of town, also known for its ample supply of sandstone. The taupe tones set against the shades of blue make for interesting backgrounds for its colorful and friendly people. Everyday scenes like this woman sitting on her windowsill peeling a beet, become spectacular studies in light and shadow. The decorative iron gates of the shutter are hidden behind a thin veil of fabric, the hidden detail revealed only with their shadow. This pretty tone on tone portrait offers depth and a glimpse of an interior which invites the viewer in. This is one of my favorite scenes captured in Jodhpur as it represents the "feel' of this city on the edge of the Thar Desert.
