David’s Insight on “Devils Golf Course"
Obtaining its name in the 1930’s from a guidebook which stated “Only the devil could play golf on such a surface”, this expansive salt pan of Death Valley is covered with slabs jutting up in jagged ruts as far as the eye can see and is one of the largest in North America. Lake Manly existed here over 150,000 years ago. Being a low point of the valley floor, these crystalized salt and mineral rimmed spikes were formed from the evaporation and erosion of water over thousands of years. While the hardened spikes are lethal the individual salt formations are delicate. After the recent floods, you can see the salt hexagons forming which cause the mudflats to expand and crack.
