David’s Insight on “Little Giants"
Mangrove trees are a vital protector of the shoreline from erosion and an important part of the local ecosystems. The dwarf dancers on Sumba Island reveal their exotic root structures towards low tide, steadfastly filtering the salt water they stand in. Thriving where other trees would quickly perish; these irreplaceable inhabitants of the brackish beach are quietly succumbing to the man-made pressures thrust upon them. This image took 3 separate trips to the site. Juggling tides, light, wind and people while standing in knee deep water proved difficult, but worth it.
