David’s Insight on “Cuban Gentleman”
This street portrait was captured in Havana, Cuba in 2017.This was one of my first experiences of street photography with the Phase One camera system.Because the camera is large, it is difficult to be inconspicuous, but I find that to be a positive.Because the camera is very noticeable, I generally ask; with a nod or a smile if I don’t share a language, for permission to take the shot.I typically shoot enough frames that people get bored and then start to relax and then I can get a more authentic expression.This gentleman was simply authentic from the start.Honesty and grace, unscripted.The fine details in this capture help to tell his story.The original soft toned portrait is beautiful, the black and white version bears the soul.
